It's been three years since the Kill Devil Hills Croatan Inn, was torn down to make way for new development on the North Carolina Outer Banks.
In the last 10 plus years there have been far to many historic structures torn down for development. In 2004 National Geographic Traveler Magazine gave the area low marks for the condition of its historic buildings and its aesthetic appeal. along with its ecological quality, social and cultural integrity and quality of tourism management. With old buildings go character and history. (The Virginian-Pilot, Kristin Davis, May 17, 2006)
With this blog, I will post information I research on this wonderful inn, as well as other interesting histories dealing with architecture, regional planning, future development and a host of various interests.
Every study of travel motivations has shown that an interest in the achievements of the past is amoung the three major reasons why people travel. The other two are rest or recreation and the desire to view great natural sights...Among cities with no particular recreational appeal, those that have substantially preserved their past continue to enjoy tourism. Those that haven't receive no tourism at all. It is as simple as that. Tourism does not go to a city that has lost its soul. Authur Frommer Preservation Forum (2, no. 3 - Fall 1988):10
Please let me know of information you may have on the Croatan Inn's history and first hand accounts and photographs.
